Your First Chiropractic Visit: What to Expect and How to Prepare
A complete guide to help you feel comfortable and prepared for your initial chiropractic appointment
If you've never been to a chiropractor before, you might feel uncertain about what to expect. This guide walks you through the typical first visit so you can arrive confident and prepared to get the most from your care.
Before Your Visit
Gather Your Information
- Insurance cards and ID
- List of current medications and supplements
- Previous imaging (X-rays, MRIs) if available
- Medical history including surgeries and conditions
- Notes about your symptoms (when they started, what helps/worsens them)
What to Wear
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows movement. Athletic wear works well. You typically won't need to change into a gown unless imaging is needed.
The Consultation
Your visit begins with a detailed conversation about your health. We want to understand not just your pain, but your overall health picture and goals for care.
- Chief complaint: What brings you in today?
- History of current problem: When did it start? What makes it better or worse?
- Past medical history: Previous injuries, surgeries, conditions
- Lifestyle factors: Work, exercise, sleep, stress
- Goals: What do you hope to achieve with care?
The Examination
After the consultation, we perform a thorough examination:
- Postural assessment
- Range of motion testing
- Orthopedic and neurological tests
- Palpation of the spine and related areas
- Muscle strength testing if indicated
- Imaging if clinically necessary
The more information you share, the better we can help you. Don't minimize symptoms or leave things out because you think they're unrelated. Seemingly minor details can be important for accurate diagnosis.
Findings and Recommendations
After the examination, we'll explain what we found and recommend a treatment plan. This includes:
- Explanation of your diagnosis
- How chiropractic care can help
- Recommended treatment frequency
- Expected timeline for improvement
- Any lifestyle modifications suggested
- Answer to all your questions
Treatment May Begin Same Day
In most cases, if appropriate, treatment can begin at your first visit. If we need additional information or imaging first, we'll schedule treatment for your next visit.
Questions to Ask
- What's causing my pain?
- How can chiropractic care help my specific condition?
- How many visits might I need?
- What can I do at home to support my recovery?
- Are there any activities I should avoid?
- What should I expect after my first adjustment?
After Your First Adjustment
It's normal to experience some reactions after your first adjustment:
- Mild soreness (like after exercise) for 24-48 hours
- Feeling of relaxation
- Temporary fatigue
- Improved range of motion
- Possible brief intensification of symptoms before improvement
How long will my first visit take?
Plan for 45-60 minutes for a new patient visit. This allows time for thorough consultation, examination, and treatment if appropriate. Follow-up visits are typically 15-30 minutes.
Will I get adjusted on my first visit?
Usually yes, if examination findings support it and there are no contraindications. In some cases, we may want imaging results or additional information before beginning treatment.
